At NALUKA, we love celebrating strong, ocean-loving women who inspire us. We caught up with Poppy, a rising competitive surfer and all-around legend, to chat about how she got started, her goals, and her advice for anyone wanting to catch their first wave.

NALUKA: How did you first get into surfing? What sparked your interest or inspired you to start?
POPPY: I started surfing back in 2020. I’d always thought it was such a cool sport, and I’d done SLS nippers before, so I already loved being in the ocean. During COVID lockdown, I had loads of time to practice—and I just stuck with it from there.
NALUKA: What do you love most about surfing?
POPPY: What I love most is the feeling of catching waves and seeing myself improve—whether it’s in free surfs or comps. I also really enjoy the community side of it, especially hanging out with friends and being part of groups like the Bronte Boardriders.
NALUKA: You now compete in surfing — what motivated you to start competing?
POPPY: Watching my idols on the WSL was a huge motivation. I’ve always wanted to compete—the drive to push myself and see how far I can go is what keeps me going.
NALUKA: Competitive surfing is a different game compared to free surfing. Do you have a routine or mindset you use to prepare?
POPPY: Before a comp, I try to stay off my phone and keep my mindset focused across the weekend. Right before I paddle out, I go through a specific stretch routine and plan out what kind of waves I’m aiming for.
NALUKA: Can you share a moment in the water where you felt genuinely scared or challenged?
POPPY: Definitely out in bigger swell—it’s always a bit intimidating. But I just remind myself why I paddled out and stay calm. Having mates in the lineup helps too. They keep things fun and supportive.
NALUKA: What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed?
POPPY: Around 10ft at Ben Buckler, on a day that was peaking at 15ft. I was nervous at first, but the adrenaline kicked in. It ended up being one of my favourite surfs ever.
NALUKA: Who are your current surfing idols?
POPPY: Jack Robinson and Steph Gilmore are my top two. I also really admire Erin Brooks—her speed and how confidently she throws airs is super inspiring.
NALUKA: What’s your number one goal in surfing right now?
POPPY: My short-term goal is to make World Juniors by the end of the year. Long-term, I’m aiming to qualify for the Tour.
NALUKA: What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn how to surf?
POPPY: Just get out there and practice as much as possible. Look for beginner-friendly breaks—they’re usually less crowded and more mellow, which makes it easier to improve and enjoy yourself.
